How to reduce phone use during study sessions

October 9, 2026·8 min read

Set your phone boundary before you open your notes: choose the distracting apps and sites, schedule the study window, then leave the phone alone until the block ends. This removes the repeated "just one check" decision that breaks a planned session.

TL;DR

To reduce phone use during study sessions, block the apps and web domains that pull you off task before each session, set a clear start and end time, and use the interruption afterward to decide what to block next. Awaytime is an iOS screen-time control app that supports scheduled blocking and daily usage limits.

  • In Awaytime, the "Study" Smart Schedule template is preset for 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on weekdays, and you can change both the times and active days.
  • Awaytime lets you select individual apps, app categories, and web domains through Apple's FamilyActivityPicker.
  • A failed study session gives you a useful next action: add the specific app or domain you opened without intending to.
  • Awaytime's current iOS app uses Apple's Screen Time and Family Controls system, so its controls depend on iOS permissions and can be disabled in Settings.
  • As of 2026, Awaytime requires iOS 16.6 or later, according to its App Store listing.

How to reduce phone use during study sessions with one rule

Use a rule that tells you exactly what happens to your phone during the next block.

For example: "From 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, block Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and the websites I use to scroll."

Do not start with every app on your phone. Start with the apps or domains that caused the last interruption. If you opened YouTube to look up a lecture and then ended up watching unrelated videos, block YouTube during the next session and use a laptop or a saved course link for the material you need.

The boundary needs a time window and a block list. "I will use my phone less" gives you nothing to follow when a notification appears.

How do you set up a study block in Awaytime?

Awaytime has a Smart Schedules screen for recurring blocks. In the current iOS app, open the Dashboard and choose "Smart Schedules / Automate app blocking." Then select "Add Your First Schedule."

Choose the Study template, then edit it

The Awaytime app includes four schedule templates: Bedtime, Work, Study, and Custom. Per Awaytime's current iOS app, the Study template starts at 2:00 PM, ends at 5:00 PM, and runs Monday through Friday.

Treat that as a starting point, not a recommendation for every student. Change the window to match when you actually sit down to work. A 45-minute session after class is more likely to run than a three-hour plan you never begin.

In the schedule editor, set:

  • Schedule Name, such as "Chemistry review."
  • Start Time and End Time.
  • Active Days, using individual day toggles or the Every Day, Weekdays, and Weekends options.

If your block runs past midnight, the editor identifies it as an overnight schedule.

Select what should be blocked

Time alone does not choose the distractions. Awaytime sends you to a separate Select Apps screen, where Apple's FamilyActivityPicker lets you choose apps, whole app categories, and web domains.

That separation matters. Keep the schedule time stable for a week, then improve the block list based on what actually interrupted you.

A practical first list might include:

  • Short-video and social apps you open automatically.
  • A browser domain that repeatedly turns one search into scrolling.
  • A game or shopping app you use to avoid a hard assignment.

Leave your course platform, authenticator, messaging channel for group work, and transit tools outside the selection if you genuinely need them. Awaytime does not currently use an always-allow list. You choose what to block, so the cleanest setup is a focused block list rather than blocking everything and trying to make exceptions later.

For a recurring routine, set up your focus blocks before your next study day rather than rebuilding the boundary each afternoon.

What should you do before the study session starts?

Set the block while you still have a clear reason to study. Do it before you open the assignment, when the temptation to check one message has not started.

Then handle the phone uses that are genuinely required.

Put needed information somewhere else

If you need a one-time code, download, class link, or instructor message, get it before the block begins. Move the information to your computer, notebook, or course materials. This prevents a legitimate check from becoming ten minutes in a feed.

If a specific messaging app is needed for a group assignment, leave it outside the block list and mute nonessential conversations. The right setup is the one that lets you finish the assignment without turning every required phone action into a workaround.

Set a daily limit separately from the schedule

Awaytime also has a Set Daily Limit screen with hour and minute controls. The dashboard shows a fox whose mood reflects how much of that daily limit you have used. It is a same-day usage display, not a diagnosis of why a particular study block went wrong.

Use it as a prompt to look closer. If you reach the end of a study session having used your phone more than expected, identify the app, category, or domain behind the detour before editing the next schedule.

What if you still reach for your phone?

The first failed session is information. Do not replace the whole routine after one slip.

Write down the exact route you took:

1. What were you supposed to be doing? 2. Which app or website did you open? 3. What reason did you give yourself? 4. Did you need that tool for the assignment?

Then make one setup change for the next block.

| What happened | Change for the next Awaytime block | |---|---| | You opened a social app out of reflex | Add that app to Select Apps. | | You used a browser to reach a distracting site | Add the web domain, not every browser task. | | You needed a class tool that was blocked | Remove only that required tool from the block selection. | | The block began after you had already started scrolling | Move the scheduled start earlier than your usual first check. | | You stopped studying before the block ended | Shorten the next session, then add time after you complete it consistently. |

Awaytime's analytics screen can also show usage trends for Screen Time, Pickups, Notifications, and Focus Time. Per Awaytime's App Store listing and current app interface, advanced insights and CSV, PDF, and JSON exports are premium features, while the app itself is free with in-app purchases. Check your screen-time report after several sessions if you need a clearer record of when interruptions happen.

Can an app blocker completely stop phone use?

No. Awaytime uses Apple's Screen Time and Family Controls system, according to its App Store listing. That makes app and web-domain blocking available on supported iPhones, but it does not make the phone impossible to access. Device controls can be changed in Settings.

Use the blocker as the boundary you set in advance, then make the boundary practical enough to keep. A block list that includes your real distractions and excludes required school tools is harder to abandon halfway through an assignment.

The Awaytime app limits and reminders page can help you review the available screen-time controls. Feature availability can depend on your iOS version, permissions, and subscription level.

Start with one scheduled session

Choose tomorrow's first study window. Add the two or three apps or domains that most often pull you away, keep the block short enough to finish, and review the first interruption before changing anything else.

Set your first focus block in Awaytime.

FAQ

How do I stop checking my phone while studying?

Set a block before you begin studying, not after you are distracted. In Awaytime, create a Smart Schedule, choose the time and active days, then select the specific apps, categories, or web domains that interrupt your work.

Should I block every app during a study session?

No. Block the apps and domains that repeatedly derail you. Keep required course, authentication, or group-work tools available where necessary, then revise the selection after a session that did not go as planned.

What should I do if I need my phone for school?

Get one-time codes, links, and downloads before the study block starts. If you need a particular app for an assignment, do not add it to the selected apps for that schedule. Block the unrelated apps that turn a required check into scrolling.

Does Awaytime work on Android?

Awaytime is currently marketed for iOS. Its App Store listing states that it requires iOS 16.6 or later.
